When it comes to spending time outside in the sun, Brummies know that their city isn’t short of outdoors activities for everyone. Without further ado, here are our places to visit this summer.

1. Birmingham Botanical Gardens

Location: Westbourne Road, Edgbaston, Birmingham B15 3TR

Not going anywhere exotic this summer holiday? Take a tour Birmingham Botanical Gardens and you won’t feel left out. With its four glasshouses, anyone can pay a visit to the tropics, desserts or the Mediterranean. Monthly seasonal walks are perfect to see what’s blooming locally year round.

2. Cannon Hill Park

Location: Russell Road, Moseley, Birmingham, B13 8RD

If you follow this blog, you’ll know that Cannon Hill Park hosts the weekly 5K parkrun, but there’s plenty more to keep you occupied. Families should go to the Fun Park for games and rides, take the Land Train to tour part of the park or play a few rounds of golf at the Mini Golf. Rent a boat and glide across the lake whilst accompanied by swans or learn about mammals, reptiles and birds at the Nature Center… The option are endless!

3. Martineau Gardens

Location: 27 Priory Road, Edgbaston, Birmingham, B5 7UG

Martineau Gardens is a brilliant project that brought together horticulturists and volunteers willing to create a community garden. The garden is now 2.5 acres of vegetable plots, orchards, herb gardens and polytunnels—many of the products are for sale. You’ll also find a wildlife area, a nature trail and bee hives-the perfect combo for an outdoorsy and educational day.

4. Lickey Hills Country Park

Location: Lickey Hills Country Park, Warren Lane, Lickey, Birmingham B45 8ER

The largest park on this list is Lickey Hills: acres of pure nature waiting to be explored. Go for a walk or a run along the many trails, be it 1.8 miles, 2.5 miles or 5.6 miles. Horse-riding and off-road cycling is possible in bridleways whilst those looking for low-key experiences can go golfing, have a picnic or visit the adventure playground.

5. Ackers Adventure

Location: Golden Hillock Road, Sparkbrook, Birmingham, B11 2PY

Thrill seekers will love this outdoor activity centre. It’s hard to imagine that a mere 2 miles from Birmingham’s centre is a ski slope, 3 climbing walls, a zip wire, a canal basin for kayaking and canoeing, archery ranges, an obstacle course… And much more. Visit and see for yourself.
