Just around the corner from us in Edgbaston lies a botanical oasis, The Birmingham Botanical Gardens. Ideal for those with green thumbs or in search of a quiet pause from the hustle and bustle of the city, the Birmingham Botanical Gardens offers idyllic glasshouses showcasing Tropical, Subtropical, Mediterranean and Arid Houses. They also host an array of exciting events all year round, such as outdoor cinemas and Winter light trails.

The Mighty Bull

Absolut Vanilla, Chambord, Baileys, fresh raspberry puree, fresh squeezed lemon juice, chocolate syrup, fresh raspberry garnish

Ozzy the Bull‘s story began when he was originally constructed for the 2022 Commonwealth Games opening ceremony (and yet to have a name!). Created from the machinery from industry and factories of Birmingham and the West Country, the Bull was pulled on stage by 50 women representing the female chain-makers of the Industrial Revolution who made chains in the slave trade. This segment of the ceremony featured the women breaking free from their chains to symbolise release from oppression.

He quickly became star of the show and was temporarily homed in Centenary Square, attracting thousands of tourists to admire the moving mechanical sculpture. When the Commonwealth Games drew to a close, the question of where his fate lay sparked a public outcry, with fears that he would end up in a scrap heap. Despite being never intended to be a permanent outdoor sculpture, it was decided that he should be preserved to symbolise when Birmingham proudly hosted the games. Ozzy now resides in New Street Station as his permanent home, where he towers above the hundreds of travellers passing through each day. He was then named after Black Sabbath’s front man, Ozzy Osbourne, following a public vote.

Fireworks By The Canal

“More canals than Venice!”. You can explore Birmingham’s historical canals by foot or by boat. However, we highly recommend the 1 mile walk (mapped out and sign-posted for you by the Canal River Trust) which begins on Livery Street beneath Snow Hill Station and concludes at the Mailbox.

The canals weave throughout the city and are complimented with many restaurants, bars and eateries which overlook the waters – Brindley Place is a stunning hub of drinking and dining spots. To read all about how to best enjoy the Birmingham Canals, check out our blog, here.

Back in 1879, George Cadbury and his brother, Richard, grew their Father’s, John Cadbury, business into a global success. They bought 14.5 acres of land four miles south in what was then Worcestershire. They named the area Bournville, giving it a French-sounding name due to French chocolate having the best reputation at the time.

The Bournville factory went on to become the biggest cocoa manufacturer in the world. You can read the full timeline of Cadbury’s 200 year old success, here.
